What is LEAD?

LEAD stands for Logic, Evaluation, and Debate. At the University of Kentucky Department of Philosophy, we believe that philosophy can offer students a number of useful skills that will make them more competitive in both job interviews and the college admissions process. LEAD focuses on two of those skills: critical thinking and public speaking.

Some high schools can only offer limited extracurricular activities for their students. Other students may want to build upon their existing talents over the summer. LEAD provides students of all levels with the opportunity to consider complex philosophical issues and debate nuanced topics with their peers.

LEAD is hosted by UK Philosophy graduate students who serve as camp counselors. Our counselors have a substantial amount of classroom experience, and are deeply committed to providing a high-quality educational experience in a low-stress environment. Camp participants will be able to meet other Lexington high school students who may attend different schools but share a passion for complex thinking and exploring life's biggest questions.

LEAD will be divided into morning and afternoon sessions. In the mornings, students will practice logic puzzles that will hone their critical thinking abilities, and learn about a wide variety of philosophical topics. In the afternoons, students will prepare for individual and team debates over nuanced issues. On the last day of camp, there will be a debate competition, with winners and prizes in multiple categories. See our Schedule tab for more information.
